What is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is an increasing problem in our society. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is associated with serious health risks for the patient and sometimes for other members of the public. Although multifactoral, the most apparent symptom in most cases is obesity. Obstruction occurs during sleep for several seconds causing the person to not reach all of the five stages of sleep. As a result, the carbon dioxide blood levels rise as oxygen lowers. This is the reason why the person falls asleep during the day and may even cause small to serious motor vehichle accidents.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) also leads to various health problems such as high blood pressure, enlargement of the heart due to increase work load, diabetes, increased choleserol and problems related to obesity, eg. back, hips, knees, ankles and feet. Psychogenic consequences of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) also include deppression, loss of drive, libido etc.

Currently the only solution to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is excercise, weight loss and CPAP supportive ventilation at night. CPAP is an apparatus that consistently applies positive pressure in the airway to prevent obstruction. This is a great positive contribution to improved living quality. Currently there is only limited surgical alternatives for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
